A property developer has sponsored full one-year subscription packages of The Star to 50 needy students here with the aim of inculcating the reading habit among them.
The developer, Tanjung Ratna Sdn Bhd, sponsored the packages worth RM599 each to the students to be recommended by Kota Laksamana assemblyman Low Chee Leong.
With the subscription package, students will receive physical copies of The Star as well as the digital e-paper.
The package also gives them access to four regional e-newspapers namely China Daily Asia Weekly, The Jakarta Post, The Nation and Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Tanjung Ratna CEO Datuk Julian Lau Joo Liang said their intention of sponsoring the subscription was to promote education excellence in the state.
“I believe in giving back to Melakans, whether through promoting education advancement or charity events,” he said after the launch of the Admiral Residence project by Melaka Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Mohd Khalil Yaakob at Kota Laksamana here on Saturday (Feb 2). The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2021.
Low, who is also the Melaka Health and Anti-Drug committee chairman, was also present during the event as the representative of Melaka Chief Minister Adly Zahari.
Meanwhile, Low said Tanjung Ratna’s sponsorship was a meaningful ang pau for Chinese New Year.
He said schools in his constituency would be asked to submit six names of deserving students to be presented with the package.
